Thackley 2 v Bedale Town 0

Bedale made the long trip down to Thackley this past weekend. With the weather threatening to make the game a wash out and with a depleted squad, including no Manager, it was always going to be a though afternoon for Bedale.

As expected the weather did have an effect on the game. Although it was not a complete wash out the heavy rain fall had taken its toll and with the amount of fixtures on the pitch that week both teams agreed to reduce each half by 5mins and only play 80minutes football.

As the game got under way it was a very even affair Thackley enjoyed the best of the possession but mostly in their own third and centre of the park as soon as they got into Bedale’s third any danger was dealt with swiftly and affectively. Although not retaining possession as well as the home side Bedale did look dangerous on the counter attack and this nearly gave them a 1-0 lead when Marc Adams found himself one on one with the Thackley keeper but pulled his shot just wide and into the side netting. Thackley again patiently built from the back working the ball left and right but still they could not find away through Bedale’s resilience. The opener final came for the home side from a corner 5 mins from half-time, for the first time in the half Bedale’s defence were caught ball watching and left a man free at the back post for the easiest of headers. Half-time 1-0.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first Thackly with the majority of the possession but Bedale always looking threatening on the break. Marc Adams again had another one on one chance to level things up put this time was denied by the Thackley goalkeeper. Half way through the second half the heavens once again opened and the pitch became even more boggy and heavier on the legs. Although Bedale’s spirits never died there was nothing they could do to prevent Thackley’s second. The ball broke 25 yards out and after a touch to steady him self the Thackley player struck a curling shot straight into the top right hand corner. 2-0. Even in the final stages Bedale still had a couple of chances to get something out of the game but could just not find the quality finish required. A 2-0 loss, but a great fighting performance by all showing true heart and team spirit encapsulated by a top performance by 17 yr old Matty Goodwin in the centre of the park. Managers for the day Nige Walker and Jonny Morris would like to thank all players for their work and commitment.

Bedale town 2 v Pannal Sports 2

Bedale enjoyed a home fixture this week with Pannal Sports making the trip north for a game Bedale needed and wanted to win.

A complete changed team meant Bedale knew they were in for a rough ride. The game started with a high tempo and the ball being blown about in the blustery condtions. But it was the visitors who took the early advantage after a defensive error which left their striker with only the keeper to beat. Bedale then levelled the tie after Marc adams closed down the opponents keeper and when the misfortunate keeper tried t clear the ball which rebounded off Adams' head for a freakish goal. 1-1.

The second half seemed to start well for Bedale with Marc once again getting himself another goal. Bedale then ad the better of the chances to try and finish the game with both Allison and Dawson going close. But with 5 min to go Pannal got thier equaliser with some sloppy defending from Bedale - again.

FINAL SCORE 2-2

Burley Trojans 2 v Bedale Town 1

League

Bedale made the trip south this weekend to Burley, a pitch that they had lost on a few weeks earlier in the Challenge Cup and after the disappointment of going out of the senior cup in such a controversial way last weekend it was going to be a big test of their resolve.

The game was never going to pretty or full of free flowing football due to the dreadful condition of the pitch and Bedale did not settle on the muddy, uneven surface in the early stages. Bedale were second to the loose balls and were not retaining any sort of possession. This was summed up by the injury to Jonny Coombs mid way through the half who had to leave the field with strained ligaments to his right knee after dangling a leg into a challenge that the Burley player showed full commitment in. Burley also took the lead midway into the first have with a thunderbolt of a free kick from 20 yards which Forbes could only stand and watch in the Bedale goal. Burley then made it 2-0 from another set piece this time from a header after striker found himself a little bit of room inside the Bedale penalty area. Going 2-0 down Bedale could of let their heads drop but on the contrary it was just the thing that sparked them into life. Bedale were suddenly the aggressors and were making Burley defend for the lives. Just before half-time Bedale got their reward for all the pressure when a free kick from wide on the right by Andrew Duffy found Jonny Morris towering at the back post who gladly applied the headed finish 2-1 half-time.

The second half got off to a controversial start when one of the Burley defenders saw red for Foul and abusive language to the ref and with Burley down to 10 Bedale really started to push them back. Bedale were creating chance after chance but could just not put the ball in the net. Nearly every chance was either scuffed or blazed high and wide and when Bedale finally did get a shoot on target through Matty Allison the Burley keep was in fine form to deny them. Adam Coombs also saw his shot rattle the crossbar. The game was then levelled up not in score but in players on the pitch when Steven Dawson saw red for his second bookable offence. (The second of which was a little harsh to say the least). With both teams down to 10 the game evened up and both had chances to score but neither could find the back of the net and the game finished 2-1 Burley.

Team: Forbes, Ryan, Parker, Morris, Duffy, Adams, Parkinson, Dixon, J.Coombs, A.Coombs, Dawson. Subs: Allison, Walker, Anderson

Bedale Town 2 v Kirk Deighton 2 (AET)

Kirk Dieghton win 4-2 on penalties

Senior Cup

It was the Quarter Finals of the Senior Cup this past weekend and with Thirsk dominating the League this was now the only real opportunity for Bedale to win some silverware in their first season in the top flight of the Harrogate Leagues. The game was a highly anticipated encounter with Bedale being drawn at home to Kirk Deighton Rangers. Kirk Deighton are currently sitting second in the Harrogate Premier and in a good run of form but are a team that Bedale have not lost to this season. In the two league ties Bedale have won one and drawn the other. The game really could of gone either way!

As the game started both teams were looking to apply the early pressure and take control of the tie but neither team could really stamp their authority and it was the defences that were winning the battle. Kirk Deighton then took the lead when a rather weak pop shot found its way into the net as the Bedale keeper failed to deal with it trying to save with his feet. Bedale knowing this was their only chance of silverware did not let there heads drop and really started to dig in. Slowly they started to push the Deighton defence further back and the chances started to come too, it was only the superlatives of the Deighton keeper that kept the score at 1-0. Bedale would not give up, and there was nothing the keeper could do to keep out Adam Coombs’s fine strike. After the ball was dropped of to him just out side the 18 yard box Coombs just moved the ball out of his feet before dispatching an unstoppable curling strike into the top right hand corner of the Deighton goal 1-1 and half-time.

Into the second half and Bedale were full of confidence knowing that they had finished the first half as the stronger team and that confidence showed. Bedale were quick out the gates and put Deighton straight on the back foot again the chances kept coming but again the Deighton keeper would just not be beaten. Chance after chance, save after save Bedale were beginning to wonder what they had to do to beat the in form keeper. It was then mid-way through the second half that finally they did, a shot from just inside the box was saved, but this time the keeper could only push it out back in front of goal where Liam Dixon was running in and happily dispatched the finish 2-1. The goal was hotly contested by the Deighton players who felt Dixon was in an off-side position when the initial shot was struck even though he had ran from deep! The referee even went over to talk to the Deighton lineman who was still stood with his flag up (as he had been for most of the game) but the goal stood. As the second half was nearing its end Deighton started throwing everything forward trying to find an equaliser they needn’t of panicked though as the Ref was about to even things up! In a bit of a goal mouth scramble Deighton nearly had the ball in the back of the net but Jonny Morris facing his own goal managed to clear the ball off the line and wide of the goal. The ball however stayed in play and as the Dieghton player came onto the ball a Bedale defender simply watched it go out for a goal kick and the Deighton player fell over. This was met by a the Referee’s whistle and the award of a penalty!!!! To the surprise of everyone….. non of the Deighton players had even appealed for one and when ask who had committed what foul, the ref replied “I don’t know I couldn’t see,”  Puzzled the Bedale players ask again “I never saw who it was I just saw a blue sock,” answered the Ref. It was obvious that the ref was trying to level things up after the Bedale goal and that he did as Deighton converted the spot kick. The game then went to extra time and although there were a couple of chances to steel the victory the game inevitably went to penalties. With Forbes injured it was Dixon that would face them for Bedale. Deighton went first and scored, Adams then made it 1-1 before the second Deighton player made it 2-1. Shane Parkinson then stepped up for Bedale and saw his well struck penalty hit the right post and fly clear. Deighton could now make it 3-1 if they could convert their next penalty. But Dixon guessed the right way and swallowed the ball into his stomach 2-1 still. Dixon himself then stepped up to take the next penalty and dispatched it with confidence 2-2, Deighton also scored their next to make it 3-2. Gibb stepped up next for Bedale and struck his penalty well into the bottom left hand corner only to see the Deighton keeper come flying across and keep it out with an out stretched arm. That meant that if Deighton scored their next one they would have won 4-2 and would be through to the semi-finals. It was all up to Dixon to keep them out and as the penalty was taken he guessed the wrong way and it was all over. Despite their best efforts and a great team performance Bedale were out………..

Team: Forbes, Ryan, Morris, Dixon, Duffy, Parkinson, Gibb, J.Coombs, Adams, A.Coombs, Dawson. Subs: Parker, Allison, Walker.

Bedale Town 2 v Harlow Hill 2

League

Bedale were looking to stop a run of 4 straight defeats in all competitions with a home tie against Harlow Hill, a team Bedale had beaten in the opening game of the season 4-2 away.

Bedale started the game well and straight away were trying to impose themselves on the opposition, for all this early pressure though Bedale could not find an opening goal for which Harlow made them pay. Jonny Coombs was caught trying a trick on the edge of his own penalty area giving the away side possession. Harlow then shifted the ball out to the right where a beautifully flighted cross was meet by their towering centre forward who looped the header back across goal and into the net at the far post. 0-1 The game was then a fairly even contest up until half-time with both teams having their spells but neither really creating any out and out chances.

In the second half it was a different story completely; Bedale really started to apply the pressure and enjoyed long spells of possession with most of the action happening in the Harlow half and this time the pressure told. Bedale got their equaliser through Shane Parkinson who latched onto a through ball and slotted the ball in the bottom corner. Bedale then doubled their lead when Steve Dawson was put through from a long clearance. Dawson one on one with keeper saw his shot saved but only for the ball to fall to the recalled Matty Allison who had the easiest of finishes. Bedale then tried to keep the pressure on and get that vital third but it would not come. Then typically with virtually the last kick of the game Harlow Hill nicked a goal when the ball broke on the edge of the Bedale penalty area and was meet perfectly by the Harlow Hill player who struck it sweetly into the bottom corner. Honours even 2-2.

Team: Forbes, Duffy, Morris, Dixon, Ryan, Parkinson, A.Coombs, J.Coombs, Goodwin, Dawson, Allison. Subs: Walker, Paker, Anderson.

Thirsk Falcons 9 v Bedale Town 0

League

Bedale were going into this game hoping to get some revenge from the imbarissing home defeat last time the two sides met.

Bedale started the game quite well and were looking to close Thirsk down quickly and not let them settle on the ball. This bright start to the game however was soon to come to an end when the star of the show took over........... the Referee!!!!!!! As the ball was crossed from the Thirsk right wing Morris stepped across the ball deflecting it away with the top of his chest, to which the ref blew and pointed to the spot for a penalty! Dispite discussions the ref would not change his mind and the penalty stood. The Thirsk player then stepped up to take the penalty. He stuck it firmly to the keepers right, the ball hit the the post square on and flew straight back to the penalty taker who then side footed it into an empty net. Now as everyone knows.....  the ball must be touched by another player before the penalty taker can touch it again and therefore the goal should be disallowed. Well that is everyone apart form the Ref!!! When this point was explained to him by the Bedale players rather than holding his hands up and admitting he was wrong he instead claimed the keeper had got a touch on it!!! Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only 2 minutes must of gone by, when the Ref then decided to award Thirsk another penalty. This time the Thirsk striker attacking down the Bedale inside left position knocked the ball just to far in front of himself and so dove over the leg of the defender. Even though it was clear to all, apart from the ref,  that there was no contact the whistle went and a penalty given. 2-0. As you can imagine the Bedale players were not very happy and had questions for the ref who's only response was to start booking the players and threatening to send off one of the subs on the sideline. Even the Thirsk players could not believe some of the decisions that were being given. Bedale clearly angered then had to really start  pushing forward to try and find away back into the game which left them wide open on the counter attack.

Into the second half and Thirsk now had a comfortable lead. The next bout of maddness was to come from the Bedale Keeper. As a long ball was put through for the Thirsk striker to run onto the Bedale keeper came rushing out of his area and sent him tumbling...... even though there were crys from the Thirk players to only show a yellow the Ref decided there was no other choice than for it to be a Red. Bedale were 8-0 down 30 mins to go and now down to 10 men. With no other recognised keeper in the team Captain Jonny Morris donned the gloves and put in a heroic performance. Morris was throwing himself in the way of everything and pulled off a number of top class saves to keep Thirsk at bay. Thirsk did manage to squeeze 1 more in before the end of the game to make it 9-0. Another dissapointing day for Bedale but the second half performance did show their battling qualities.

Team: Yuffy, Duffy, Morris, A Coombs, Parker, J Coombs, Gibb, Ryan, Parkinson, Walker, Dawson. Subs: Anderson, James, Allison

Burley Trojans 2 v Bedale Town 1

Senior Cup

Once again Bedale's game was at the mercy of the weather only this time the rain held off just enough to make the Burley pitch playable!!!

Bedale struggling to find their form after the christmas break and having not been helped by the number of games called off were hoping that this could be the game that rejuvenated their season.

The game started brightly for Bedale, although the pitch did not lend itself to free flowing football, in fact was probably one of the worst come across in Harrogate Premier, Bedale were still creating the better chances and fighting hard to be first to everything. The hard work paid off mid way through the first half when a great passage of play from the away team saw the ball sprayed out to the right wing from centre midfield where Marc Adams was waiting to recieve. Adams then drove forward cutting into the Burley back line and delivered a tantalising cross which was met perfectly by Dawson bursting down the middle, who happily applied the finish. 0-1 HT.

In the second half Bedale were looking to get the second goal and kill off the cup tie, but it just wouldn't come. Chance after chance went begging. Misses from Coombs, Adams Parkinson could all of sealed the game but as the chances were missed Burley started to grow in confidence and after a suprising ball back to the defence which lead to Morris playing a dangerous ball across to Parker  whom then struggled to clear the header and Burley were in to get the equaliser.

The game was now in lmbo and could go either way. The one thing neither team could afford was a mistake and that is exactly what happened. A Burley corner to the near post was some how missed by the 3 or 4 Bedale players in that area and the out rushing goalkeeper only to hit the back of Coombs and deflect into his own net. 2-1. Bedale were now under pressure to find an equaliser to the take the game into extra-time and thought they had when Adams cross found Parkinson unmarked, 2 yards out and with the goal at his mercy, but he somehow managed to not make contact with the ball and the chance went begging. Burley then just closed up shop and saw out the last 5mins to record a 2-1 victory.

Pannel Sports v Bedale Town (posponed)

Once again Bedale Town were victims of the British weather with their game at Pannel Sports being called off as early as Thursday with a water logged pitch.

Bedale Town 1 v Duchess 5

North Riding Cup

It was another big game for Bedale this past weekend and unfortunately it was another one to forget too.

After the thumping from Thirsk the week before the Management hoped that the Scarbough team would feel the back lash but it was not to be. Bedale again did not look their usual selfs and with some key players missing were forced into a change in formation. This did not help the home side who struggled to create chances and were often wide open to the counter attack.

The only high light of the game was a well taken penalty from Lee Shardha with Duchess running out 5-1 victors.

Bedale Town 0 v Thirsk Falcons 8

The new year brought missery to Bedale who suffered an 8-0 thrashing at the hands of League leaders Thirsk.

I can not even report on the game and Bedale can make no excuses they were just that bad!!! Lets hope that is the Christmas hang over done with and get straight back to winning ways next week.

Team: Forbes, Parker, Morris, Anderson, Duffy, Adams, Gibb, A Coombs, Allison, Walker, Dixon. Subs: Burn, Sturdy

Bedale Town v Sherwood (posponed)

For the second week running Bedale were jolted by the weather. This time it was the R&R Stadium that could not fight off the frost and the match was posponed due to a frozen pitch.

Pannel v Bedale Town (posponed)

League

Once again Bedale's game had to be cancelled due to the poor weather conditions. This time it was a frozen pitch that prevented the game from going ahead!

Bedale Town 5 v Burley Trojans 1

Senior Cup

Bedale were looking to take there great fighting spirit that saw them past Aclam last week into the the game against Burley this past Saturday. It was the first time the two teams had met in any competition and so neither team knew what to expect. One of the biggest challenges on the day for both teams turned out to be the weather! With a mixture of rain, snow, sleet and hail all mixted into to a brisk blustery wind it was far from the perfect conditions.

The early stages of the game saw both teams struggling to come to terms with the conditions with mistakes happening all over the pitch. The slippery surface was making it very difficult for the players to pass the ball around or even stay on their feet. With the slight advantage of kicking down the slope it was Burley that had the better of most of the first half with Bedale having to defend deeply and try and hit them on the counter attack. It was Burley who broke the deadlock following a goal mouth scramble which included a great save from Bedale goal keeper Kev Forbes 0-1. Bedale needed to find the fighting spirit they showed last week if they to prevent Burley running away with the game. After the goal Bedale dug their heels in and started to push Burley further and further back. With Matty Gibb controlling the midfield and keeping the ball moving Bedale started to create chances. Stephen Anderson was only denied by a great save from the Burley keeper after a 25 yard drive. It was another long range effort from Stephen Anderson that led to the equaliser, Anderson struck the ball from the edge of the 18 yard box which then came off a combination of the Burley defender and Nige Walker. Who's goal??? the debate continues...... 1-1 half-time.

From the first minute of the second half it was clear to see whatever had been said at half-time had been taken on board and it was now Bedale that were taking the game to Burley. Bedale got the important second goal when Marc Adams pounced on a loose ball inside the Burley box 2-1. Bedale kept the pressure on and the goals kept coming. After a great run through the defence and after rounding the kepper Marc Adams had the easy task of rolling the ball into an empty net to claim his second goal... just to see Nige Walker come steaming in and blast the ball over the line from 6 inches out and put claim to a controversial brace!!! 3-1. There was also goals for substitutes Matty Allisson and Liam Dixon to round of the 5-1 win and move Bedale into the quarter finals of the Harrogate Senior Cup.

Team: Forbes, Duffy, Morris, Parker, Scanlan, Coombs, Anderson, Gibb, Adams, Dawson, Walker. Subs: Allison, Dixon, Burn

Bedale Town 5 v Aclam Steelworks 3 (AET)

North Riding Challenge Cup

After not having played for 2 weeks due to cancellations and posponments Bedale were ega to get this game played. Although the weather did cause some slight worries in the morning it was decidied that the game would go ahead. Bedale were having to play the game at the High School as both the Bedale teams had been drawn in home fixtures.

From the first whistle Bedale knew what sort of a game they were in for when Dave Scanlan was on the end of a crunching late tackle. But if anything this enspired the Bedale team even more and they were determined to let their football do the talking.

Bedale controlled the early stages of the game and took a well deserved lead when a Jonny Coombs cross was turned in by a glazing headed to the back post by Stephen Anderson. Bedale then soon doubled their lead through a very well worked Marc Adams goal 2-0. Aclam now realising that they had a fight on their hands now started to push back and for the last 10 mins of the half had their best period of possession which also lead to them getting a goal back. 2-1 halt-time.

In the second half it was again the away team that took control of the game and had soon gone from a goal down to a goal up 2-3 Aclam. Bedale were going to have to dig really deep now if they were going to get anything out of the game. And that is exactly what they did! Bedale really started to push Aclam back but could just not find that all important equaliser. Then just when it looked as if Bedale were going to run out of time Jonny Coombs pounced on a loose ball just inside the 18 yard box and drove the ball home 3-3. Unbelievably Bedale could of then won the game inside the 90 but Andrew Duffy blazaed over from 2 yards out.

Into Extra-time and there was only one team that were going to win the game and that was Bedale. Matty Allison on as a sub in the second half was fresh and running the legs off the Aclam defence. The all decisive goal came when a long throw from Jonny Morris was flicked on by Stephen Anderson where Matty Allison was waiting to scor the easiest of headers 4-3. Bedale were determined not to let the visitors back into the game this time and so kept pressing and it paid off when Matty Allison got his second and secured the victory and passage to the next round 5-3.

Eccleshill Utd Res v Bedale Town (Posponed)

League

For the second week running Bedale weren't in action! After the disappointment of not getting to face local rivals Kirby last week Bedale were looking forward to the challenge of an away game at Eccleshill however the weather man had not read the scrip. Half an hour before they were due to meet Bedale recieved the phone call saying the game had to be posponed due to a water logged pitch.

Bedale Town v Kirby Malzeard (Cancelled)

League

Bedale were awaiting the vistor of their close neighbours Kirby this week, however 30 minutes before kick off and already kitted up with the referee waiting, Bedale recieved a phone call from the Kirby camp to inform them that they would not be making the short trip down the dales as they only had 6 players!!!!

Sherwood 1 v Bedale Town 3

League

Bedale travelled to Harrogate, for a mid-week fixture against Sherwood. The game was played under floodlights at Harrogate Railways ground. Bedale, for the first time in a few weeks, had a full squad and were determined to put things right after Saturday's disappointing performance against Spa.

As the game started it was very obvoiusy that this was going to be a toughly fought game with neither team going to allow the other to settle on the ball or get into any sort of rhythme. Chances were few and far between in the first half hour with both teams resricted to pop shots from outside the box, non of which really troubled the keepers. It was only in the last 15 mins of the first half that one team seemed to be slightly getting on top and that was the home team. Sherwood seem to find that extra gear and started to make Bedale chase the game. That period of play from the home team also lead to the opening goal as the half finished 1-0.

At the half time team talk Bedale were determined not to let this game slip away and were confident that a good start to the second half and they could even go out and win the game. And that is exactly what happened!

From the minute the ref blew to start the second half Bedale were on their game. They were closing the ball down quickly forcing mistakes from the home team, Bedale started moving the ball around retaining possession this time making Sherwood chase them and more importantly they were a lot more ruthless with it. The equaliser came when Matty Gibb's free kick, from out on the left, was perfectly delivered in between the keeper and defence leaving Liam Dixon with an easy tap in at the back post. 1-1. Bedale were now flying and showed no sign of letting up they keep up the tempo and the chances kept coming to. It was Dixon again that made it 2-1, this time he was put through down the inside left channel as he made a bursting run from the centre of midfield. After a great first touch to bring the ball under he delivered a superbly flighted chip over the on rushing goal keeper that nestled in the far corner of the goal.

Sherwood then had a chance to really get themselves back into the game, when against the run of play they were awarded a very dubious penlaty by the ref. Was contact made with the ball before the player? Was it inside or outside the box? All questions that did not matter as the Sherwood player struck the penalty firmly against the cross bar and away to safety. Sherwood did then try to press a bit more but the Bedale defence stood strong and it was again Bedale that would be celebrating. This time it was substitute Andrew Sturdy that wrapped up the game and the 3 points. Sturdy in a similar way to Dixon for the second found himself with half a yards space and after a great first touch delivered the lobbing finsh to make it 3-1 Bedale!

Team: Yuffy, Parker, Morris, Anderson, Scanlan, Duffy, Gibb, Dixon, Adams, Walker, Dawson. Subs: Sturdy, Williamson, Goodwin

Bedale Town 1 v Spa Athletic 7

League

Bedale were going into this game full of confidence after their 11-0 win over Ampleforth last week. The bouyant mood soon turned a little sour however, when just 30mins before kick-off the Management were starting to realise that they did not actually have a goal keeper in the squad. The problem came as the Manager thought the keeper had said he was available for the game last week but aparently he was not! It was therefore up to Jonny Coombs (centre Midfielder) to don the gloves and try and convince the oposition he knew what he was doing!!!

As soon as the game started Bedale did not look up for the game they were second to every ball and didn't seem to passing the ball around like they had done the week before. It was a mistake at the back that lead to the Spa opener as Jonny Morris was caught in possession. Bedale did try to fight there way back into the game but to no avail as Bedale found themselves 3-0 at the break.

As the second half started Bedale were hoping for a change in fortune as they were now kicking down the hill with the wind behind them, however Spa had other ideas and were soon 4-0 up with the helpless Coombs stranded in goal making every valent effort to keep them at bay, but could do nothing! Bedale's task of getting back in the game was then made impossible when Steve Dawson saw red, literally! After a tough challenge Dawson kicked out at the Spa player right in front of the ref who had no alternative but to show him a straight red card. Down to 10 men Bedale did battle hard and managed a consilation goal through Marc Adams but could do nothing more as Spa finished the game 7-1 victors.

Bedale now have only 3 days to pull themselves together, as they face Sherwood in a re-arranged fixture at Harrogate Railways ground this Wednesday evening.

Team: Coombs, Williamson, Morris, Parker, Duffy, Allison, Gibb, Anderson, Adams, Dawson, Walker Subs: Burn, Goodwin, Sturdy

Bedale Town 11 v Ampleforth 0

North Riding Callenge Cup

The North Riding cup brought a welcome change for Bedale this past week after the humbling 5-1 defeat by Thackley 2 weeks ago. With no game last week the Bedale players went into the game fresh and ready to get back to winning ways.

From the very early stages of the game Bedale looked the more superior team, although they had not found top gear they were still dominating posession and probing for the opener. The deadlock was broken after 15mins by Steve Dawson who neaty finish a low struck cross from 6 yards. Dawson then made it 2-0 just 5 mins later when Danny Carrick picked him out with a beautifully flighted cross to which Dawson applied the header. Bedale's confidence was really starting to build now and they started cutting the Ampleforth defence apart with ease! The third goal came after 35mins when Nige Walker controlled a loose ball majestically before driving an unstoppable half-volley into the top corner of the net form 18 yards. The first half's scoring was then completed by Danny Carrick, it was Dawson that this time turned provider as he sent a high deep cross into the area beyond the Ampleforth defence which was met by Carrick at full pace cutting in from the left wing who calmy stroked a left foot volley into the back of the net asthough it was a training match. 4-0 half-time.

In the second half Bedale were determined to keep the pressure on and make sure they did not let the visitors back in. The pressure told almost instantly as the Ampleforth defence gifted Bedale a penalty. Up stepped Dawson who tucked it low into the bottom left corner to complete his hattrick. It was the ever busy Adams turn to open his account next when he was put through my the again impressive Gibb 6-0. As the second half progressed it was attack after attack after attack from Bedale. Midway through the half Bedale had made a Triple subsitution bringing on 3 of the younger players in Matt Goodwin, Nick Carlisle and Lee Williamson. Both Matt and Nick settled into the team quickly and both with pace were the last thing the Ampleforth defence wanted to see.The visitors could barly clear their lines before Bedale were back at them and the goals kept coming too. There was a fourth for Dawson before another two goals gave Adams his hattrick 7, 8, 9-0. Matty Gibb then got himself a well deserved goal. Gibb had been involved in the build up to nearly all of the Bedale's goals supplying a number of the assists. He was put through by a cutting pass by Steve Anderson to which Gibb applied the one touch finish 10-0. The final goal of the game then came form Adams to match Dawson's 4 goals. The impressive Carlisle burst though the Ampleforth defence before cutting the ball back to give Adams the easiest of finishs11-0. Ampleforth did have a late chance of a consilation goal when a rash tackle form Williamson gave them a penalty but true to form the the Ampleforth striker saw his shot saved by Chris Cownton in the Bedale Goal.

Team: Cownton, Burns, Morris, Parker, Forbes, Adams, Gibb, Anderson, Carrick, Dawson, Walker. Subs: Carlisle, Goodwin, Williamson.

Bedale Town 1 v Thackley 5

This past weekend Bedale were hosts to one of their near rivals at the top of the Harrogate Premier Division, Thackley.  After an infatic win last week against Bramham Bedale were looking to extend their winning run to 6 straight wins in all competitions.

Bedale started the game brightly with Marc Adams finding himself twice going through one on one with the keeper but squandered both chances. From the early stages of the game though it was clear to see which team was going to dominate proceedings, Thackley straight from the first whistle showed their intentions winning the individual battles all over the park and being first to every loose ball. Bedale although not playing badly just could not impose themselves on the game and were 2-0 down by half-time.

The second half started the way the first had finished and Bedale were soon 3-0 down. Bedale then changed formation reverting back to a 4-4-2 and personnel on the pitch and things seemed to work much better. After some good work out wide by Marc Adams his cut back was met perfectly by Matty Gibb who drove the ball into the net 3-1 could Bedale fight their way back into this game?.............No! Thackley then wrapped the game up with 2 more goals making it 5-1 and a day to forget for Bedale.

With no game next week Bedale have two weeks to re-assess and sort things out before the visit of Ampleforth in the North Riding Challenge Cup on 3rd November 2007.

Bedale Town 5 v Bramham 0

It was another huge game this past weekend at the R&R stadium as Bedale Town were hosts to Bramham. The two teams that had gone head to head for the past few seasons. The last time the two teams met was the final game of last season, again at Bedale, with the winners being crowned champions of Division 1. The honours that day, deservedly went to Bramham and so it was up to Bedale to make a menes.

Although looking at the league table it would seem the two teams have made very different starts to life in the Premier Division Bedale knew the capabilities of the Bramham side and that they were not to be under esstimated. To add to it all with the Managerial turmoil at Bedale this week it was up to two of the more senior boys to take the helm and try and keep Bedale's good start going.

As the game started it was a very even affair with both teams fighting to get on top but neither one letting the other get the upper hand. As the first half progressed it was Bedale that slowly started to turn the screw and got themselves on top. Although Bedale were enjoying more of the posseions they could not make the breakthrough, Matty Allison had a couple of near misses after swifty one touch build up play down the left, and both Steve Dawson and Matty Gibb saw there long range efforts just sail past the post. The breakthrough finally came when a Jonny Morris free kick from just inside his own half was delicately flicked on by Steve Dawson to send Shane Parkinson through who gladly applied the finish. Bedale kept pressing and should of made it 2 when Jonny Morris headed a Matty Gibb free kick back accross goal but Marc Adams completly miss kicked from two yards out to squander the chance. Bedale did get their second of the half when Seniko Sandyford vollied home from 12 yards from a Matty Gibb corner. 2-0 half-time.

Into the second half and it was very much the same story, although Bramham did come out fighting trying to get back into the game it was soon Bedale back on top. Another well crafted moved released Steve Dawson down the inside left channel and his shot/cross was turned in by the desparing Bramham defender. Dawsons goal and 3-0 Bedale. Bedale were now playing with a supreme confidence and started passing the ball around left to right not letting Bramham settle and with the movement of Allison and Dawson up front were creating chances all the time. The fourth then came from Allison himself after great work by Gibb the Bramham defence missed their chance to clear and Allison pounced on the loose ball  inside the box then calmy rounded the goal keeper and rolled it home. The game was then wrapped up by the superb Marc Adams who with Shane Parkinson had ran the Bramham defence ragged all afternoon. Adams was put through by a cutting pass by Gibb, for his third assist of the day, Adams one on one then delicately chipped the ball over the on coming goal keeper 5-0.

It was a good day for Bedale keeping them 2nd in the league, and both Fasty and Mo would like to thank the players for their commitment and effort.

Bramhope 2 v Bedale Town 3

Bedale returned to Bramhope this past weekend, a team that they had not played against in a couple of years, and after a great start to the season in the league Bedale were again looking to take all 3 points.

Bedale started positively and quickly got Bramhope on the back foot. From the early stages from the game the Bramhope goal keeper was looking in good form. Bedale soon made the break through though after Marc Adams scored a great individual goal. Adams picked up the ball in the Bramhope half and after skipping past 2 Bramhope defenders Adams calmly slotted the ball past the Bramhope goal keeper. As the half progressed Bedale were still creating chances and it was again the outstanding Bramhope goal keeper that was keeping his team in it. He could do nothing however about Bedales second. After a great ball in from a Gibb free kick Phil Parker met it perfectly to score a bullet header into the bottom corner.

The second half saw a change in fortunes as Bedale did not start very well and let Bramhope straight back into the game, 2-1. Bedale then still not playing as well as they had in previous week re-enstated their 2 goal lead when Matty Allison poked the ball home following a goal mouth scramble. As the game progressed it turned into a bit of a scrappy affair. In the later stages of the match Bedale were awarded a penalty which Matty Gibb royally missed! Bedale then let Bramhope again back in to make it 3-2 and may be the home side thought they might even sneek a point. However it was Bedale who again took the initiative and it was only the excellent Bramhope keeper that kept them at bay. The matched finished 3-2 which takes Bedale to 2nd in the league.

Wetherby Ath Res 2 v Bedale Town 3 (aet)

Not a lot to report on this one. It was easily the worst performance of the season. With no one playing well, and all needing to get things sorted quickly.

Dawson opened the scoring with a tidy finish, after being put through 1 on 1 with the keeper. Wetherby then brought the game level and took the game into exrta-time.

Goals from Adams and Kelly in extra-time then seem to have settled the tie  for Bedale but Wetherby would not lie down and scored their second of the game to set up a nervy finish! Bedale did hold on despite late pressure and move on into the next round.

Bedale Town 2 v Otley Town Res 1

Bedale were in for a tough test on Saturday at the R&R Stadium as they entertained Otley Town a team who had already beaten the likes of Sherwood this season.

The tough decsions however came even before kick off for the 'gaffer' Mark Williams as he found himself with a full squad to pick from for once, which meant he would have to dissapoint a couple of players by them not even being able to make the bench.

Decsions made it was into the game. It was a bright start from Bedale who enjoyed the best of the play in the early stages and were always looking dangerous. As the half progessed and Otley started to settle themselves a bit you wondered where Bedale were going to find the goal from. Then mid way through the half Bedale were awarded a penalty. Tasker had recieved the ball just inside the Otley box and with the defender far too tight to him went to turn drawing the foul and the referee pointed to the spot without a moments hesitation. After a short delay it was Jonny Coombs who held his nerve and slotted the penalty in the bottom corner to make it 1-0 Bedale.

After the goal Otley really started to push Bedale back and there was some last ditch defending required to keep them at bay. Then after the ball was given away cheaply in midfield a laps by the defence allowed the Otley striker to skip through and equalise just before half time.

Into the second have and again it was Bedale who were doing all the pushing. Bedale were a constent threat especially from set plays, with Phil Parker missing a hat full of chances. It was left to last seasons top scorer Matty Al to regain the lead for Bedale. Matty collected the ball about 8 yards out and with a shimmy and a shuffle turned the defender and drilled the ball into the bottom corner 2-1 Bedale.

The second half then played out exactly like the first with Otley piling on the pressure in the later stages, but this time Bedale's defence were determind not to let them back in and never allowed them space to play restricting them to pop shots from the edge of the box. The game finished 2-1 a hard fought but more than deserved victory to take Bedale 3rd in the league.

Bedale Town 3 v Kirk Deighton 2

Bedale recovered from last weeks hammering at Spa to put a very worthy performance against Kirk Deighton at the R&R Ice Cream Stadium on Saturday.

Bedale took the lead after five minutes when a Jonny Coombs corner was converted from close range by the big man, Jonny Morris. Bedale looked very comfortable in the first half and scored their second in the 35th Minute. A marvelous run from Marc Adams was finished off from a Matty Al volley from the edge of the area. Fantastic goal.

This is how it stayed until half time.

The second half started the same way in which the first finished with Bedale having a lot of possesion but very few chances. Kirk Deighton then started to find their feet and a low shot from the edge of the box was well saved by Heugh to deny Kirk Deighton. Bedale reacted just as Mark Williams would like and went up the other end and scored their third, after a good flick by James was met by Shane Parkinson who neatly lobbed the goalkeeper. Bedale were now cruising and it was lack of focus at the back that caused Kirk Deighton to get their 1st. Again sloppy defeding at the back allowed Kirk Deighton to clinch their second of the game.

Well done boys, good result to take us 4th in the league.

Spa Atletic 5 V Bedale 0

Bedale suffered their first defeat of the season this week with a 5-0 hammering to the hands of Spa.

Bedale started poorly with none of the team looking particularly interested. Bedale found themselves 1-0 down within the first 15 mins from a headed goal. Another sloppy goal made it 2-0 and just before the half Spa scored another to make it 3-0.

Again a half time roasting was issued by Mark W. This seemed to spur the team on slightly and they looked to be getting back in the game, but another goal was scored on the hour mark and Bedale's heads dropped. Spa scored their 5th and the game was definitely over.

This just wasnt good enough from a bedale side who have started well.

Kirk Deighton Rangers 2 V Bedale 2

With another midweek fixture Bedale travelled down the A1 to the in form Kirk Deighton.

The game started well with both teams trying to play the ball on the floor and challenging well, and fairly for 50/50 balls. But the first talking point of the game came when two Deighton players challenged for the same ball and one of the players having to have hospital treatment after receiving a gash to the bridge of his nose. All at Bedale wish him a quick recovery. This seemed to spur Deighton on, and 7 minutes later they took the lead with a fine strike from the inside of the area. Bedale struggled after this, and found it difficult to get the ball into the attacking third. They scored their second 15 minutes later when a scramble in the box led to a tap in from 4 yards out. Bedale rallyed after this and a long throw from Carl Kelly seemed to bypass all defenders and find its way to Shane Parkinsons feet who finished by taking the ball around the keeper.

Half time, 2-1.

After receiving another stern talking to, Bedale started the second half with a lot more belief. Although it took them until the 70th minute to cause any real problmes to the Deighton defense. Another swift moving involving many of the team eventually found Shane P who pulled it back, but failed to find any one to hit home into an open net. the winner came 10 mins from time when Steve D pulled the ball back into the area to find Carl Kelly, who slotted the ball past the defender on the line.

Once again Bedale made it hard for themselves, having to concede two goals before realising that they are in a game.

Bedale Town 2 V Eccleshill United 2

Bedale dropped their first points of the season this weekend with a hard fought draw against Eccleshill united.

Bedale started poorly and should have been a goal down within the first 45 seconds. Playing against the wind and uphill for the first hallf, Bedale knew it was going to be tough. Bedale's goal was fired upon for much of the half, rarely getting a chance to get forward and threat Eccleshill's goal. Ben Heugh made some fantastic saves, but a defensive mistiming allowed the opponents striker to unleash a strike at goal, and left ben with no chance. the second was a bizarre goal, and again left the manager asking questions about his teams defensive capabilities. an inswinging free kick was left by everybody and found the bottom corner. it could have been 3-0 if not for the penalty saving ability of Bedales number 1. half time, 2-0.

Bedale came out second half, with theirs ears still ringing from a hlaf time roasting off Mark Williams. these spurred the team on, and soon found themselves back in the game when Jonny Coombs found himself lying on the floor in the box after a needless challenge in the area. he stepped up and finished. Bedale then took the games to Eccleshill, having chance after chance. but it eventually fell to Chris James in the 81st minute when he finished witha right footed effort from 8 yards out.

2-2. a second half performance to pull a point from what was looking like a convincing loss. Well done lads.

Kirkby Malzeard 0 V Bedale Town 7

Bedale kept up their wining form with a 7-0 thrashing of Kirkby Malzeard.

Bedale began the game with a positive attitude, but took them 20 minutes when a through ball from James was taken on by Dawson who slotted home past the keeper. It was then Dawsons turn to repay the favour when he lofted a ball over the defence and found Chris James running on the lob the oncoming keeper. This is how things remained until half time.

Bedale then made a sub and replaced Senicko with Coombs. Coombs made it quite clear why he should be starting with two quick fire goals to take it to 4-0. Danny Williams then got on the score sheet with a lovely taken goal, passing the ball into the top corner and out of the reach of the goalkeeper. Jonny Coombs then got his hatrick when Steve Dawson provided the cross that was inch perfect to meet the head of Coombs. Dawson then finished thigns off when he tackled the last defender and went on to drive one past the, by now, sickened goalkeeper.

Lets hope we can keep this up against Eccleshill United on Saturday.

Harlow Hill 2 V Bedale Town 4

Bedale travelled to Harrogate for their first league game of the season in Harrogate and Districts top league.

Bedale started the game well when after 90 seconds Marc Adams picked up on a deflected shot from Steve Dawson and managed to slip the ball past a helpless keeper. Play continued to go well for Bedale and it was the new Boy Lee Williamson who got the 2nd, when a shot come cross sailed over the keeper.

Harlow Hill then came back into the game, scoring twice before the half time mark.

on the 65th minute Steve Dawson made it 3-2 when he turned in the box and shot, and some how managed to trickle past the defenders and goal keeper. Steve Dawson was involved in the next goal also when the referee awarded him a dubious penalty after being tackled in the box. Jonny Coombs stood up the neatly put the ball in the corner and put the game past Harlow.
